The first example of an unsolved crime that I found most intriguing is the death of Edgar Allan Poe. Poe died on October 7, 1849. He was found outside of a saloon in Baltimore, MD. He was found in a delirious state muttering something that no one was able to understand. He was also wearing someone else's clothes. Although he did not die there in the street, he died a few days later. His death was thought to be caused by "congestion" of the brain. This can be caused by a multitude of things including trauma, vascular disorders, and nerve damage, all of which have the main symptom of delirium in common. This seems to point to the idea that Poe was indeed mugged, but other scholars believe he may have had rabies. This hypothesis also poises a definite possibility, but does not point out an exact answer. There was no autopsy done on his remains so there is no conclusive evidence to be discussed. This case is astonishing. One of the best American authors winds up nearly dead on the street and not a single person has a clue as to why and the case was put to rest. Why is it that no one pursued the mystery? Was there a reason for his death? This conspiracy idea is what drives my interest in his death.
Another unsolved mystery, that is far from the crime scene, is the unidentified truth about the Bermuda Triangle. This area stretches from Miami, FL to San Juan, Puerto Rico, up to Bermuda and back to Miami, forming a triangle in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean. Many scientists have tried to describe the events that are said to happen in this desolate region. No one proposal can satisfy each odd happening that has been said to occur there. Of the most famous mishaps in this terrain are the disappearances of the USS Cyclops and Flight 19. Both were assumed to be caused by an unforeseen storm, however no remains were uncovered even though theoretically they would lie at the bottom of the ocean. This is just one of the many mysteries that are of great interest to me. The many speculations of why events like this occur are amazing.
