One
unsolved mystery that has always fascinated me is disappearance of the Roanoke
colonists. After settling the island,
John White left for England to get supplies for the new colony and was unable
to return for three years due to the conflict between England and Spain. When he finally arrived, he found the entire
colony had vanished. The only clue was
the word “CROATOAN” carved into a post at the fort. Many historians believe that the colonists
moved to the nearby island inhabited by the Croatoan Indians, but no evidence
was ever found.
