Branching from that, another example of a modern day detective is a coroner. In the show, Body of Proof, Dr. Megan Hunt examines dead bodies to help solve the crimes that brought her the dead body.
I think that both of these detectives are popular today because they usually always solve the case. People like mysteries with an absolute ending. Each of these tv shows are only an hour long which is enough to get hooked on the storyline but isn't enough time for viewers to get bored. Plus, these two characters are full of witty comments and a sense of reality.
