Examples of ways someone becomes a hero

In Merlin, King Uther became a hero by fighting the evil knight in place of his son. The evil knight was thought by the king and others to be unbeatable. Uther believed that whoever fought the knight next would die, but that if he fought the knight and died then he would be able to save his son's life in the end. So, the reason this act made Uther a hero was because he put his son's life and the wellbeing of the kingdom over his own life. The ultimate selfless act of putting your life at risk for others is a characteristic of many heroes.

In the episode of Supernatural, Sam and Dean became heroes by courageously going into the sewers to slay what they thought to be an evil dragon but which ended up being evil dragon-people. They knew that the dragon had captured many innocent girls and was a threatening force that could kill them, but nevertheless went into the sewers with courage. They put the lives of the captured girls before their own, which made them heroes.
