When I think of hero's rising up from the proletariat, there are many good examples which come to mind. The first of those is Rand al'Thor. Al'Thor is a fictional character in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Times series, who begins book 1 as a Shepard on his father's farm in a tiny village far removed from anywhere. By the end of book 1 he has been whisked away by a sorceress and her body guard because of who he is, and he ends up slaying one of the Dark One's forsaken. By the end of the 13th book he is the most powerful individual on the face of the earth, and looks likely to do battle with the Dark One himself in the pits of Shayol Ghul.

Another hero that comes to mind is Milo Thatch from the disney movie Atlantis (Atlantis is real BTWs). In the movie, Milo is first shown reading books in the boiler room of a museum, and having all of his proposals turned down. However, after finally finding someone to listen to him he ends of saving the lost empire of Atlantis and restores it to its former glory.
