A nobody who becomes a hero

There was this construction worker who dove under a subway to save a man. Wesley was a construction worker who was taking the subway, when a man started convulsing and fell onto the tracks. The train was coming straight at them in full speed and Wesley did not have much time to think, so he took the guy to a "narrow trench that lay between the tracks" and held him in a tight squeeze. The conductor tried to stop the train when he saw them, but did not have enough time to stop it. But, they both surprisingly survived the horrific incident.

Another example would be Keith Lane. He stops suicides as a hobby. He lost his wife, to what they think was suicide, a while back. So, now he goes to that area and helps those who seem to be at a place in their lives. He saves about 20 suicides per year.

Those are two very good examples of "nobodies that become heroes". I give both those men a lot of credit because they both risked their lives to save others.

from nobody to a hero

Heroes come in many different forms. The first example of a nobody that became a hero is Ella Fitzgerald. Ella, who eventually became the "Queen of Jazz" started out living on the streets and visiting soup kitchens for meals. After getting solid ground beneath her feet, she was able to be one of the most influential singers in history. She even got to sing for President Reagan while he was in office. I think she is a hero because she influences children and adults daily to pursue their dreams, no matter what it takes.
The next example of nobody transformed into a hero is Mr.Sullenberger. Nobody knew who he was prior to the events of January 15, 2009. Now a retired air captain, his name has became synonymous with hero. He ensured the safety of every passenger on his plane before worrying about himself. He was able to work under pressure and made sure that no lives were lost. He was extremely brave and courageous for what he did, as well as brilliant.

Nobodies who Became Heroes

A “nobody” that becomes a hero… one person that comes to my mind is Todd Beamer. Beamer was aboard Flight 93 on September 11, 2011. He was part of the group that decided to rush the hijackers of the plane to save the lives of many innocent people. Todd was an ordinary man who had a passion for sports and being a Godly husband to his wife, Lisa and father to their two sons, David and Drew. Todd Beamer made a call just after the hijackers took over the flight to the desk to a woman named Lisa Jefferson to explain what was going on. He talked with her until they put their plan into action and try to stop the hijackers. Beamer left behind his wife, Lisa along with David and Drew and the new baby that they were expecting in that upcoming January. Todd Beamer risked his life in attempt to save those on Flight 93, his family, the nation. He was a “nobody” that became a hero.

I also believe that parents are some of our biggest heroes. Most parents are ordinary folks who work ordinary jobs and raise their children in the best way they know how. Most people view them as “nobodies”. Growing up, I for one never appreciated my parents to the extent that I do now. I can see, looking back, how many times they sacrificed what they wanted to allow me to have what I wanted or needed at the time. So many nights of driving my sister and I to ball games, practices, concerts.. spending the day with us instead of their friends. These parents are as ordinary as one can get, but in my eyes, they are heroes.

A nobody who becomes a hero

I personally liked researching heroes in real life because they are much easier to relate to.

One example of a nobody who became a hero is a man named Jonathan Brito. His house had caught on fire and there was smoke all over the place. His wife managed to get outside, but two of his kids, ages two and four, were still upstairs. He went through completely black smoke in order to get to them and carried them out. He then bravely went back in to get his dog, Punchy, who was unconscious from the smoke. He got the dog outside and then performed CPR on him and got him to breathe. The dog was fine and began running around. I feel there is nothing braver than the classic example of running into extreme danger in order to save your children. It is an act of pure selflessness and caring that displays how strong a parent's love for his children are. I thought it was also very unique that he performed CPR on the dog. I have never heard of it being performed on animals before.

Another example of an everyday hero is a man named Jeremy Hernandez, a gym instructor. One day the front of a bus filled with 50 children was wedged somehow in a bridge collapse. The front exits were completely cut off and it was likely that the bus was going to gradually slip forward into the water. Amidst kids screaming and the whole bus shaking from the collapse, Jeremy ran to the back of the bus and opened up the back exit. He began instructing the kids to come his way and handed them to people on the street beneath them. I thought it was truly remarkable how calm this hero remained in the midst of such a deadly situation. Many lives were saved that day.

A nobody to a hero

Since i think a lot of people are going to use superheroes, i thought i'd use real life individuals. I got both of my examples from http://www.cracked.com/article_19766_6-nobodies-who-turned-into-superheroes-without-warning.html.

1. Wesley Autrey, a 50 year old construction worker in New York City. He was waiting on a subway platform with his kids when a man next to him started to convulse. Wesley and another person went to help but the man ended up falling onto the tracks as a train was rolling in. Without thinking Wesley jumped down to help him but since the man was still convulsing he couldnt pick him up so with quick thinking he found a trench that ran between the track and rolled the man into it and jump on top of him. Wesley didnt know if he would fit but it was the only option that came quick enough. As it turns out, they survived and Wesley was recongnized by Ellen Degenerous and awarded 10,000 dollars.

2. Guo Zhongfan was a local community officer in China when a woman dressed in her wedding dress (fiance broke off the wedding because he fell in love with someone else) climbed out of a 7th floor window of her apartment building and let go of the edge, beginning her free fall, when Guo grabbed her out of the air. The girl proceeded to fight the grip but Guo was able to get her inside.

Our Heros

A hero from the t.v. series Army Wives was Trevor LeBlanc.  He was deployed in Iraq and was in a market place with his squad when he noticed a man with a gun.  Before the man pulled the gun on everyone, Trevor shot him and saved all the civilians from harm.

Another hero that many can probably remember was Chesley Sullenberger "Sully".  Sully was the caption of the US Airways Flight 1549, the plane that he successfully landed in the Hudson River, saving many lives in the process.

Unsolved Mysteries/Crimes

My first example of an unsolved mystery is commonly known as the boy in the box. It was first brought to my attention when the television series Cold Case based an episode off of it. The boy in the box is an unsolved murder from 1957 in which a young boy was found naked, wrapped in a blanket, and placed in a large cardboard box. I find this mystery fascinating because it was such a young child, and yet he could not be identified. I can understand how independent people can go missing, and others simply assume they moved on with their lives. However, a child is extremely dependent on others, and therefore cannot go missing coincidentally. I do not understand how it is possible that no one reported that this boy was missing or identified his body. It seems as though someone should have known him.
Cold Case Episode: The Boy in the Box

My second example is more of a general mystery: our justice system. Our justice system is based off the belief that it is better to let a thousand guilty people go free than imprison one innocent person. Many people will argue that we carry out the former part of that belief by letting people such as OJ Simpson and Casey Anthony go free. However, the Innocence Project has also shown that we have failed to fulfill the latter part of that belief. Mistakes have been made and innocent people end up in prison. Therefore the mystery is how to implement an effective justice system: one which imprisons guilty people and lets the innocent go or at least doesn't imprison innocent people. I find this fascinating because a lot of effort is already exerted to make our system work, but it doesn’t. Putting guilty people in prison does not seem like a complicated concept, but it is much easier said than done. Is our current system the best we can do? Or is there a mystery to be solved? Or is it simply unsolvable?

Foreign Detectives

Giancarlo Abete

While he is slightly different from the prototypical detective, Abete is a detective none the less.  As president of the Italian Football Federation, (FIGC - Federazione Italiana Gioco Calcio), Abete has made multiple investigations into multiple betting scandals across Italy in the past few years.  His degree of success varies based upon who you ask, but it is generally agreed upon that like the rest of the Italian Government, he is immeasurably corrupt.   For example, over the summer a case was on trial concerning the involvement a coach named Antonio Conte.  Being tried for match-fixing while coaching a previous team (he has since moved on), there was one player on the team, Filippo Carobbio, who testified against him, with an argument that ended up contradicting itself.  There were over 24 players and coaches who spoke in favor of Conte, yet Abete sided with Carobbio and banned Conte for 4 months.  As it stands, Abete is nothing more than an incredibly poor detective.

The Counte of Montecristo

Billionaire, faithful, philanthropist.  Such is an accurate description of the mysterious figure formerly known as Edmund Dantes.   Again, not an out and out detective, but his various exploits as a vigilante across the Mediterranean region certain belay the skill set required by a detective, and in many cases far surpass that of any detective.  This is never more evident than in his dealings with Roman outlaw Luigi Vampa, as well as various members of the french aristocracy when he is trying to fix the system.

1. Detective Chen Cao (written by Qui Xiaolong; China)

Foreign Detectives

L from Death Note:
L is ruthless and dedicated.  For example, he murdered a man on public TV to advance his investigation into a serial killer.  The guy who he killed was a criminal on death row set to die that day, which was how he justified the death.

Ciel Phantomhive:
Ciel has a complex set of motivations.  He is 14 years old who is "the queen of England's watchdog," which is to say he watches over the criminal underworld and strikes only at the most opportune times when the queen commands it.   To keep watch over criminals, he acts as one.  He leads the opium trade.  The reason why he is acting in the capacity of watchdog is that his parents were murdered, his home was burned down, his innocence was taken, and his body was almost sacrificed to God by a masked cult. Before he was about to die, he sold his soul to a demon in exchange for killing the persons who committed these atrocities.  Only problem is that he first has to discover the persons behind it.  He uses his position of watchdog to unravel that mystery while executing orders for the queen and maintaining his position as a drug lord.

Detectives of Other Cultures

The first I chose was crime and punishment because it is a mystery and detective novel that is written by a Russian Author but that made its way into mainstream media and is a commonly read novels across the globe.

The second I chose is a French crime novel called Le Mystere Des Dieux. The mystery of the eyes.

Detectives in Other Cultures

The Coroner’s Lunch, written by Colin Cotterill tells the tale of Dr. Siri Paiboun. By what seems to be an elimination process he become the coroner in Lao, because he is the only doctor left. After a member of the royal family is brought to his table and bodies of soldiers start to surface on a Laotian lake, he becomes entangled in the middle of an international crisis.

The Prophet murders, by Mehmet Murat Somer, is a Turkish detective novel portraying the adventures an owner of a transvestite night club and his efforts to find out why two of his patrons are now dead on the dance floor.

Japanese and Korean detectives

This Japanese detective film Ekiro is about a banker who is retiring and ends up going missing. The detective comes in to solve the mystery that a women seems to hold the key to.

H.I.T is a Korean detective movie centralized around the drama that arises when a team of detectives are joined together that do not know each other.  None of these detectives trust each other but in the end figure out how to work together.

Bollywood Detectives

So this weekend, I watched clips from several different Bollywood-style Detectives.  Like most things from Bollywood, I was immensely entertained-- a Bollywood detective is typically not very bright, but rather clumsy and often stumbles into his mysteries and the clues to solve the mystery.  Very Pink Panther-esque.  In fact, Chatur Singh Two Star is an Indian version of Pink Panther.  The sets are glamorous and over-the-top, the acting is absurd, and also over-the-top.
